NYCOM Disaster Relief Partnership Group – DRPG
Mission: Today’s physicians are faced with unforeseen tragedies where disaster occurs to people both far and near home. Large scale disasters like 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina have opened the eyes of physicians to the importance of disaster medicine. Our mission is to train and educate medical students in disaster preparation, disaster planning, disaster response, and disaster recovery leadership throughout the disaster life cycle. We aim to provide insight, guidance, and expertise on the principles and practice of medicine in areas of disaster impact. We hope to aid future physicians, via workshops, lectures, and various events in the management and participation of disaster relief operations.
National Organization: American Red Cross – http://www.redcross.org; Nassau County Medical Reserve Corps – http://www.
Our Chapter: DRPG participated in the Safety First Community Plunge at the Glen Cove Boys and Girls Club. With the aid of other clubs, DRPG members were able to teach the children the importance of upholding safety in disaster situations . With the help of the American Red Cross, DRPG members were trained and certified in First-Aid. Kevin O’Hara from the Nassau Country Medical Reserve Corps gave an informational talk about the medical corps and invited members to join. Dr.Lardner gave an inspirational first hand account of serving in Haiti. Dr.Saggio’s presentation addressed everyday emergency situations such as diabetic emergencies, baby deliveries, choking emergencies and seizures and what we as medical student can do when we find ourselves in these situations. These presentations, workshops, and trainings gave DRPG members both insight and an opportunity to learn about disaster medicine.
