On our 2nd general body meeting of the year, held last Friday, October 14th, AOCPMR welcomed Dr. Robert Gotlin, D.O., the Director of Orthopaedic and Sports Rehabilitation and Coordinator of the Musculoskeletal and Sports Rehabilitation Fellowship at Beth Israel Medical Center as our guest speaker. Dr. Gotlin frequently appears in the media on radio, television, and in print, and also serves as a medical consultant for various professional teams, including the NY Knicks, NY Liberty (WNBA), NJ Nets, and the NY Yankees. Dr. Gotlin spoke about Validation of the Shoulder Exam, which demonstrated that many special tests (including some that were taught in DPR and OMM sessions during first year) that are routinely used clinically to help diagnose shoulder problems have not been validated prior to their widespread dissemination and use in the medical field. In describing his personal journey to his current position, he was both motivational and informative, explaining that NYCOM students are very well prepared for careers in PM&R and are preferentially chosen for rotation spots at his program. He then encouraged students to join the AOCPMR and to attend this year’s national conference on Saturday, April 21st in Philadelphia. Student feedback was very positive as evidenced by the number of students participating, asking questions, and staying after the meeting for further discussion. Dr. Gotlin’s talk especially resonated with first year students and we received a glowing response from them about the meeting, as they had recently learned this material.
We also welcomed Dr. Isaac Kurtzer as our new advisor!
